Today’s Tjoon Monday comes to you a little late in the evening. I spent a beautiful day in my city, exploring the best and the contrast. From a Christmas party at a place of safety for children in Kayelitsha to an evening stroll with the rest of Cape Town along the Prom.
But I’ll tell you all about that tomorrow.
One of my all time favourite local bands is Just Jinger, headed up by lead singer and sexiest man alive Ard Mathews. I was utterly heartbroken when he shaved off the dreads. Those dreads appeared in my dreams occasionally.
Every summer, right around Christmas, they play a concert at Dunes Restaurant in Hout Bay. This season, it’s the 22nd December. As in this Saturday (Get your tickets here).
I love these concerts. It’s the most chilled atmosphere. The crowd feels it, the musicians feel it. It’s not about the show, it’s about the music and the atmosphere and the venue. Everyone is there to chill, to enjoy themselves, to enjoy the mountains and the salt air and the pink skies.
At one of these shows a few years back Just Jinger, as a band, performed the most incredible drum set. Every band member grabbed a set of sticks and drummed. On every surface, on scaffolding and the jungle gym beams and the edge of the stage. They tossed water onto the drums and beat until the water dripped off the ends of their dreadlocks.
I couldn’t find a video of it, but here is a drum solo performed at Kirstenbosch last year.
See you all on Saturday!

Aw, this was an extremely nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to produce a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a whole lot and never seem to get nearly anything done.
